Hello everyone! My name is Archi, and I recently had the privilege of visiting Somnath with my family. Somnath, located in the Gir Somnath district of Gujarat, is a place of immense historical and spiritual significance. Let me take you through our memorable journey.
Somnath Temple
The Somnath Temple stands majestically on the shore of the Arabian Sea. It is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in India and is mentioned in ancient texts like Skandpuran, Shreemad Bhagavat, and Shivpuran. The temple is dedicated to Bhagvan Someshwar (Lord Shiva) and is one of the 12 most sacred Shiva shrines, known as Jyotirlingas.
The temple’s history dates back to 649 BC, but it is believed to be even older. The present structure was reconstructed in 1951. The temple garden features colorful dioramas of Shiva’s stories. Every night at 7:45 PM, a sound-and-light show narrated by Amitabh Bachchan highlights the temple’s history.
According to legend, the temple was first built by Somraj (the moon god) in gold, rebuilt by Ravana in silver, by Krishna in wood, and by Bhimdev in stone. The current structure is designed traditionally and painted a creamy color with fine sculptures. The large, black Shiva lingam at its heart is a serene and sacred sight.
The best time to visit the Somnath Temple is between October and February. Special celebrations occur during Shivratri (usually in February or March) and Kartik Purnima (close to Diwali).
